Etymology

History

Ballarat East

Before amalgamation Ballarat East was a municipality that adjoined the eastern portion of the City of Ballarat. Initial Research from [1]


Ballarat East Municipality

The Ballarat East Municipality was proclaimed on 5 May 1857. Its firs council was elected 1 June 1857.[2]

1872 - Proclaimed a town. [3]

In 1882 Ballarat East had a population of 14,722 and 1705 ratepayers o the roll. [4]

George Clendinning, elected to first council 1 June 1857 and was chairman in 1860

William Bickham Rodier was the first Chairman of the Ballarat East Council from 1 June 1857.[6]

William Scott was elected Chairman of the Ballarat East Council in 1859, 1861, 1879 and 1885.[7]
