History

Born 13 January 1879 at Ballarat, he was educated at Grenville College.[1] He married Violet Alice Palmer in 1908. [2]

In August 1914, at the age of 39,[3] Coulter enlisted during World War One, becoming a member of the 8th Battalion. [4] He sailed to Gallipoli on the HMAT Benalla on 19 October 1914. [5]

Graham Coulter landed at ANZAC on 25 April in Command D Company, 8th Battalion.[6] He was promoted to Major on 09 May 1915, and assumed command of the 8th Battalion on 27 August during the illness of Lt Col. Brant. [7]

He was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's dispatches on 13 November 1916 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for distinguished service in the field.

Captain G. Coulter returned to Australia on 10 January 1918, and his appointment was terminated in Austalia on 18 March 1918. He was re-appointed as Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel, Officer Commanding Troops (Voyage only) on 03 March 1918. He embarked from Australia on 30 July 1918, and returned to Australia on 11 February 1919. His appointment was terminated on 20 February 1919.[8]

Coulter died on 06 September 1960. [9]

Legacy

World War One service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.

Coulter was recommend to the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George by Brigadier General N.M. Smythe on 31 July 1916.[10]

On 01 January 1917 Coulter was awarded the Distinguised Service Order for leadership of his Battalion in France. [11]
