History

Meagher was the publican at the Reform Hotel at Haddon from about 1877-1880.[1] Meagher took over the publican's license of the Lady of the Lake Hotel at Learmonth in July 1884.[2]

Meagher was the publican at the Balmoral Hotel in Learmonth, <1893>.

In August 1893 his son Joseph accidentally swallowed poison:

LEARMONTH. Wednesday. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) Mr Joseph Meagher, of the Balmoral hotel, Learmonth, and son of Mr Meagher, the well-known traveller for Messrs Tulloch and Son, brewers, last evening drunk a quantity of spirits of salts in mistake for soda water, the former liquid being in a soda water bottle. Dr Salter was immediately sent for, and under his treatment Mr Meagher is progressing as favorably as can be expected, although his condition was for a time critical.[3]

Joseph died a week later from the poisoning at the age of 19.[4]

Meagher's eldest son, John, was killed in 1895:
