Ballarat Sewerage Scheme, Federation University Historical Collection (Cat. No. 604)

Contents

Background

An Order-in-Council was passed on 30 November 1920 to enable the Ballarat Water Commission to extend its powers and responsibilities as a sewerage authority. A. Farrer, former Engineer of the City of Ballarat, was appointed Engineer to the Ballarat Sewerage Authority. The scheme proposed making provision to sewer the whole settled area adjacent to the city, as well as the city.[1]

Construction of the works commenced on 6 December 1922. An area of about 300 acres was acquired for the disposal works which were situated one mile below the southern boundary of the city, east of and adjoining the Yarrowee Creek. After preliminary treatment the sewerage was measured by a Venturi meter, then passed into sedimentation tanks. It was then passed through oxidising filters which distributed the treated sewage by sprays. Once purified it as passed into the creek.[2]

The first house was connected to the system on 1 July 1925.[3]
