History

Architect Arthur George Legge had rooms in the Colonial Mutual Building, 1 Lydiard Street, Ballarat.

Legacy

A.G. Legge was the architect for the following buildings:-

  • Ararat Hospital
  • William Bones Brick Building, Lydiard Street, Ballarat (now part of Art Gallery of Ballarat).
  • Brick Shop in Grant Street.[1]
  • Old Colonists' Hall, Lydiard Street, Ballarat.
  • Shop in Sturt Street for A. Thomson.[2]
  • Shops for W. Bones.[3]
  • Swan Hill Hospital.[4]
  • Jubilee Wesleyan Church and Hall, Wendouree Parade, Ballarat.[5] It was a wooden building constructed in accordance with the strict Wesleyan codes of restraint in design and a lack of ornamentation, and cost £450 to construct.[6]

WANTED QUARRYMAN, to quarry building stone. Apply A. G. Legge, Colonial Mutual Chambers, Lydiard street, Ballarat.[12]
The new hospital was opened to day. There was a large gathering, and the toasts of "The Queen," "Prosperity to the Swan Hill Hospital," "The Ladies." and "Prosperity to the Swan Hill District," were proposed. The style of the building is Elizabethan, intermixed with classic, and the cost has been about £5,000 Mr. A G. Legge, of Ballarat,was the architect. The building stands on a rise at the back of the township, and has a splendid view all round.[13]
