History

Alexander Bell was born about 1851 in Dumfermline, Scotland to Alexander Bell (c1825-1908) and Sophia nee Williamson (c1829-1908).


He in Victoria in 1855 and was educated at Carisbrook. Bell ran a grocery business in Ballarat South for many years before retiring from that business to establish an auction and share broking firm. Bell was a member of the Stock Exchange since 1892, and a member of the City Council from 1891 to 1899 and 1910, serving as mayor from 1896-7.[1]


He was Chairman of the Ballarat Woollen Mill from 1871 to 1887,[2] visiting England in the company's interest in 1914.


He was a director of the Phoenix Foundry in 1905 and 1906.


Bell was the director of the Britannia Gold Mining Company and the Ballarat Land Mortgage Company.


He was also Chairman of the Horse Tramway Co., President of the Queen statue committee, and a member of the Burns and Moore statue committee.


Bell was Worshipful Master of the Yarrowee Masonic Lodge from 1908 to 1909.[3]


Alexander Bell died 27 March 1931 in Ballarat. He is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery (Area Private F, Section 3, Row 1, Grave 18).

Legacy

Alexander Bell was a founding member of the Old Colonists' Club Ballarat.
