History

Amelia Roberts was born in Cornwall in 1837, the daughter of Anthony Knight and Phillipa Varcoe.[1] She married John Roberts in Victoria in 1861.[2]

They had eight children:

  • Mary Amelia Roberts (1862)[3]
  • John Roberts (1864)[4]
  • Eliza Jane Roberts (1866)[5]
  • Annie Emelina Roberts (1868)[6]
  • Thomas Stephens Roberts (1870)[7]
  • Cecelia Susan Roberts (1872>[8]
  • Clara Ellen Roberts (1874)[9]
  • Laura Elizabeth Roberts (1875)[10]

She died at Creswick on 21 May 1914.

She was the publican of the Railway Hotel in Creswick from 1871-1914.

A very old and highly respected resident of the town, in the person of Mrs Roberts, licensee of the Railway hotel, Creswick, and relict of the late John Roberts, passed peacefully away yesterday morning after a short illness. The deceased lady, who was 77 years of age, was a native of Bodmin, Cornwall, and came to Creswick in 1861. In 1871 she had the Railway hotel built, and up till the time of her death was the licensee. Her husband predeceased her eight years ago. During Easter week the deceased contracted a chill, and although Dr Wilson had been in constant attendance she got beyond medical skill, and as stated above passed away yesterday morning. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is expressed for the bereaved family of six daughters (two of whom are in the Education department) and two sons in their sad loss. The funeral will leave her late residence on Saturday (to-morrow) afternoon at 3 o'clock.[11]
