The American Hotel was in Ballarat, Victoria <1859-1892.

Background

History

In 1860 the hotel was offered for sale:

" FOR SALE, the AMERICAN HOTEL, Main Road, Ballarat. To be disposed of in consequence of the proprietor being about to retire from the public life. For particulars, apply on the premises."[1]

It was one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[2] The owners were paid £545 compensation for the closure of the business.[2]

Site

The American Hotel was in Main Street, Ballarat.[3] Hargreaves identifies the site as being six doors from the south west corner of Main Street and Barkly Street.[4]

in 1863 the hotel was used for meetings of the Ballarat Pigeon Shooting Club.[5]

In the news

The hotel was mentioned in the Argus, 1889, after a fatal accident:

"John Evans, a miner, aged 62, accidentally fell over the balustrade in the American Hotel, Ballarat East, last night, a distance of 20ft. He did not appear seriously hurt at first, and this morning he got up. A few hours afterwards, however, he suddenly fell dead."[6]
