History

Annie Westcott was born at Leigh Creek, with the birth being register at Warrenheip near Ballarat, Victoria.[1] Her parents were Frederick Westcott and Rachel Abrams/Abrahams.[2] She trained as a nurse at the Ballarat Hospital.[3] At the age of 40 years she enlisted to serve as a nurse during World War One.[4] At that time she had experience as a Matron at Maldon for 2 years and Inglewood for 16 years, and she gave her sister as next of kin - Miss Amy Westcott of Pine Lodge, Leigh Creek via Ballarat, Victoria.[5]

Miss A. M. Westcott has resigned as sister of the Maryborough hospital subsequent upon her appointment as matron of the Inglewood Hospital.[6]

Staff Nurse Annie Westcott of the 1st Australian General Hospital embarked for Australia from the Suez on 21 January 1916, undertaking nursing duties during the voyage. She resigned from her appointment in the A.A.N.S. on 03 July 1917.[7]

She married Frederick Smith, but it was not a successful union. The couple had a soldier settlement block at Trafalgar, Gippsland, Victoria, but it was relinquished in 1926 due to non-payment of fees.[8]

Annie Smith died and was buried at Ballaarat Old Cemetery on 10 May 1951 (Area F1, 9, Row 1, Grave 26) surrounded by other members of the Westcott Family.[9]
