The Australia Felix Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1857-1941>. In 1970 it became the Eureka Stockade Hotel

Background

The hotel is mentioned in advertisement in 1857.[1]

History

The original Australia Felix Hotel was built in the late 1850s after Bentley's Hotel was burnt down.

The Australia Felix Hotel was destroyed by fired on 15 January 1862.

In January 1940, the publican, Catherine Teresa Murphy was in court for breaching the licensing laws. She was fined £5 for having the bar doors open after hours, and 15s for having people on the premises.[2] In December 1941 she was in trouble again:

"Catherine Teresa Murphy (Australia Felix Hotel) Eureka st was fined £4 for delaying admittance of the police."[3]

In 1970 it was known as the Eureka Stockade Hotel.

Site

The Australia Felix Hotel was on the south West corner pf Eureka Street and King Street.[4][3]

  • Inspector Parkinson described the licensed house A wooden building, in rooms, lath and plastered; very clean, splendidly furnished, and well conducted. The principal business was a bar trade. Henry Josephs, owner and licensee of the Australia Felix hotel, stated that he had held a license for 33 years. He had a large bar trade and a large family trade, and thought his house equal to the requirements of the locality.[9]
  • In 1936 the residence of licensee T.J. Murphy was burnt by fire:
An unoccupied six-roomed weatherboard house at the corner of Eureka and Otway streets, owned by Mr. T. J. Murphy, licensee of the Australia Felix Hotel, Eureka-street, wus gutted by fire at 3 a.m. on Monday.[10]
