Captain of Shift

In 1873 the candidate for the Certificate of Captain of Shift at the Ballarat School of Mines were required to pass the following subjects:

Keeping Men's Time

Sinking and Timbering Shafts

Opening Out and Timbering Chamber

Cutting and Timbering Drives

Fixing and Management of Pumps

Measurement of Firewood

Every candidate for a Certificate of Captain of Shift must have been employed at least three years as a miner, or one year as a Captain, and must produce satisfactory certificates thereof, and of good conduct, to entitle him to be examined.[1]
