History

MR CUTHBERT, ARCHITECT, invites TENDERS for the Erection of a Verandah on Soldiers’ Hill. Plans and specifications to be seen at No. 4 Commercial Chambers, where tenders are to be delivered before 4 o’clock on Tuesday, 21st instant. Any tender not necessarily accepted.[1]
MR CUTHBERT, Architect, invites TENDERS for the erection of stables for Walter Craig, Esq. Plans and specifications to be seen at No. 4 Commercial Chambers, where tenders are to be delivered before four o’clock on Thursday, the 23rd instant. Any tender not necessarily accepted.[2]

Legacy

St Andrew’s Kirk, (built 1862-1864) Ballarat was designed by Ballarat man Charles D. Cuthbert – with addition of the porch and vestry in 1873, tower and spire in 1884 (designed by Figgis and Caselli), and transepts in 1889 (designed by Figgis and Molloy). The choir vestry was an even later addition – built in 1926.[3]

C. D. Cuthbert designed the second Council Chambers of the first Town Hall of Ballarat. He also designed the Town Hall for Ballarat East in 1860, the second part of the Ballarat District Hospital in 1866, St Peter’s Anglican Church, Ballarat and St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in 1862.[4]
