Background

The Ballarat School of Mines Department of Scientific Research was established in 1919. Its establishment resulted in a marked increase in the number of samples submitted for analysis, to the extent that it was not always possible to keep pace with them. [1]

In early 1882 Frederick Martell introduced a series of scientific lectures in connection to the Ballarat School of Mines. Mt Ellery was invited to deliver the first lecture on the Electric Light.[2]
