George Crocker
George Crocker was a general draper, milliner and outfitter in Ballarat.
History
George Crocker was born in Somerset.[1]
On its letterhead of 1878 the business was listed as being established in 1853 and situated in the Hall of Commerce Building, Sturt St, Ballarat, opposite the City Hall.[2]
Crocker's premises (according to the Australasian Federal Directory) were located on Sturt Street, Ballarat in 1887.[3]
Crocker married Clara Walsh in 1872.[1] They had a number of children including:
- Alice May Crocker (1873)[4]
- Elizabeth Dening Crocker (1875)[5]
- Clara Caroline Crocker (1877)[6]
- George Edwin Crocker (1879-1946)[7][8]
- Hilda Crocker (1881)[9]
- Harold Theodore Crocker (1882)[10]
- Gordon Crocker (1885-1915)[11]
- Frederick Eustace Crocker (1886)
- Esther Isherwood Crocker (1890)[12]
George Crocker was a member of the Ballarat City Council, and served as Mayor of Ballarat from 1912-1913 and 1919-1920.[13]
Legacy
The Crocker family managed the business until 2011.[13] The store in Armstrong Street, still called "Crockers" is now run by a Melbourne based company TD Noone Retailers.[13]
