John Gibbs was a publican, businessman and local politician in Ballarat, Victoria, <1857>.

History

John Gibbs made gas from gum leaves and oil in the 1850s – this was used in several buildings, including the Charlie Napier Hotel in Main Road. Gibbs held the publican's license for the hotel in 1857.[1]


He was elected to the first Ballarat East Council on 1 June 1857[2], after an extensive advertising campaign in the local newspapers.[1]
