Metallurgy at the Ballarat School of Mines
In 1880 the Metallurgical Laboratory was described as being in very good condition, with 12 reducing furnaces, 3 cupel furnaces, and a small blast-furnace. The students were suplied with fuel, pots, balances, pestles, mortars and sieves for triturating and thoroughly mixing the ores operated upon. [1]
The 1880 course of study embraced:
- theoretical and practical Metallurgy including Electro-Metallurgy.
- Assaying in all it's branches, including gold and silver assaying, the examination of clays, fuels necessary for use in the Laboratory, and technical works. Twelve student could be accommodated in this class, and a furnace placed at the disposal of each.
Apparatus was supplied to any student conducting different methods of wet assays.[2]
The work performed the the Ballarat School of Mines Metallurgical Laboratory in 1880 was:
- Assays of gold and silver - 1390
- Assays of minerals - 200
- Gold melted - 33,300 ozs
- Silver melted - 600 ozs[3]
