History

Thomas Caffrey was born in Victoria in 1861, the son of William Caffrey (1834-1881) and Bridget Mullins.[1] His father, William, was a blacksnith who operated a business in Buninyong from about 1870.[2] He took over his father's business in 1881. In 1886 he married Elizabeth Whykes.[3]

Caffrey ran a carriage factory and forge at Buninyong in Learmonth Street from at least 1888[4].

In February 1889, the Ballarat Star reported a fire at the forge:

BUNINYONG
The fire bell sounded an alarm at 20 minutes past 12 this morning, which caused nearly every resident to turn out. On arriving at the scene of the fire, it proved to be Mr Caffrey’s forge building that was burning. However, the Buninyong Fire Brigade did great service; in fact they were so smart that the fire was extinguished in a very short time without the whole of the premises being destroyed. Mr Caffrey says that he is not insured, the policy having been allowed to lapse some two months since He estimates his loss at not exceeding £30, but the subsequent loss is greater, through his not being able to execute the work on hand. This is the third time Mr Caffrey has had a fire, and his adjoining neighbor, Mr Sleeman, has suffered a similar number of times, and the destruction of the whole of their buildings again is not unlikely. The fire is supposed to have originated through the charcoal heap catching fire.
The watercarts were again conspicuous to day by their absence, and I think if they were examined at night they would very often be found empty, hence their non-appearance. The fire brigade are not altogether satisfied with the gratuitous orders given them by outsiders. Men who should know better make themselves very prominent by giving orders to those who are banded together to extinguish fires, and have their captain and officers, who are capable of knowing all the wrinkles in putting out fires. For the future it is to be hoped outsiders will take the hint here given.[5]

Thomas Caffrey died at Buninyong in 1917.[6]
