Background

The hotel had several different names of the years[1]:


History

It was one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[2] The owners were paid £452 compensation for the closure of the business.[2]

Site

The hotel was on the south east corner of York Street (formerly Esmond Street) and Dodd Street, Ballarat. Hargreaves describes it as being at the base of Red Hill, and one of the liveliest places in the "digging days."[2]
