In 1873 the candidate for the Certificate of Underground Manager at the Ballarat School of Mines were required to pass the following subjects:

Preparation of Wage Sheets

Surveying Surface and Undergraound, and plotting

Ventilation

Every candidate for a Certificate of Underground Manager must have been employed at least two years as a Captain of Shift, or one year as an Underground Manager, and must produce satisfactory certificates thereof, and of good conduct, to entitle him to be examined.

The Holder of one year of a first-class Certificate as Captain of Shift shall be entitled to be examined for an Underground Manager's certificate.[1]
