History

Walter Rowbotham (A.R.C.A. Lond.) was senior art master at the Ballarat School of Mines from 1919.[1] The Minutes of the Ballarat School of Mines Council of 17 July 1919 report:

"Applications from the undermentioned candidates for the position of Senior Assistant Art master were received and considered:-
W. Rowbotham
R. Proctor
D.J. Johnston
T.H. Trengrove
T.R. Pridgeon
J. Hennessy
Frank Campbell
Cecily J. Callanan
It was resolved to recommend to the Education Department that Mr W. Rowbotham be appointed to the position as a commencing salary of 312 pounds per annum."[2]

The Ballarat School of Mines Students announced his arrival in the 1919 magazine.

This year we lost the services of Mr Harold B. Herbert from the Art School staff. his departure from the art school has been keenly felt by the students, He was a friend to all, and always took a great interest in any movement for the advancement of the school and students. we wish Mr Herbert every success in his new career and hope he will rejoin us after his extended trip.
We extend a hearty welcome to Mr Rowbotham who has taken Mr Herbert's place.[3]

Walter Rowbotham's application for a salary increase was not successful in 1920.[4]

Rowbotham and Don I. Johnston were First Assistants to the Ballarat Technical Art School Principal in 1921[5], and Rowbotham's name is no longer found in the teaching staff of the Ballarat School of Mines in 1922.[6] The Personal Column of the 1922 Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine states:

Since our last issue we have lost the services of our Senior Art Master, Mr Rowbotham, whom we hope will continue to be as popular with his new pupils at Caulfield Technical School as he was with his old students.[7]

The resignation of Walter Rowbotham from the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School was accepted at the School's Council meeting of 25 November 1921.[8]
