History

William Hamlet Purdy worked at the Phoenix Foundry.

William Hamlet Purdy died 0 August 1914 in Victoria (Australia). He is buried in the Ballarat Old Cemetery, Area F1, Section 12, Grave 17).

Residents of South Melbourne will regret to hear of the death of Mr. William Purdy, who, many years ago, carried on business as a tobacconist and hairdresser in Clarendon street. The deceased had not been in robust health for some time, and on the 1st inst. developed bronchial pneumonia. He entered the Homoeopathic Hospital, but his condition rapidly became worse, and he died on Sunday last. The late Mr. Purdy served his time as a fitter in the Phoenix Foundry, Ballarat, and was afterwards employed by Robinson Bros., South Melbourne. Resigning his position there, he started business as stated in Clarendon street. Then he migrated to Western Australia, where for some years he was successful as a stock and sharebroker in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Failing health caused his return to Victoria. After a lengthy holiday he was engaged by Messrs. W. G. Kelly and Lewis, ironfounders, Bourke street, where he remained until his death. Mr. Purdy possessed a kindly, genial nature, and had a wide circle of friends, by whom his death is deeply regretted. Mrs. Walter Myers, of Middle Park, was a sister, and Mr. Harry Purdy (Robert Burns Hotel) a brother of the deceased. The remains were interred in the Ballarat Cemetery [sic] on Tuesday.[1]
