May 1861 - Crushing plant with 16 heads, a 40 horse power engine and 'boiler of proportionate size' - for approximately £2,000.[30]

Last Chance Quartz Mining Co.

November 1859 - Erection of castings for water-pumping engine.[34]


Llanberris Co.

March 1860 - Winding engine of 9 horse power.[35]

April 1860 - New stamp heads and contrivance for shafts in batteries to ride upon.[36]

February 1861 - Alterations of the engines (to increase the reducing power from eight to twenty heads), including alterations to the ripple boxes[37], at a cost of L300.[38]

May 1870 - Work to the value of L41 18s.[39]


Lodden Valley Gold Mining Co.

1900 - The biggest pumping plant ever made in Australia.[40]


M. C. Luth (former New Sovereign Co.)

February-March 1871 - 20 head battery.[41] 'Carter and Co. have the contract for erecting the whole of the additions to the plant, and will complete everything excepting the housing-in and flooring.'[42]

November 1869 - 8 head battery.[43]


Midland Counties Mining Co.

March 1860 - Castings for crushing works.[44]


Midland Counties Quartz Mining and Crushing Co.

June 1860 - Casting of fittings and supply of machinery, 'a substantial engine by Duff & Co., of Glasgow, 16 3/8 inch diameter of cylinder, 26 inch stroke, 10 feet diameter fly wheel, giving 60 revolutions per minute to the battery driving wheel. The boiler is 28 feet 6 inches by 5 feet 6 inches diameter, with the usual fittings, especially a vessel for supplying hot or heated water to the boiler. From the engine a pinion drives a 4 feet 6 inch cog-wheel, connected with a strong shaft, 5 ½ inch diameter, carrying four drums containing cams, lifting 16 heads of stamps of 5 ¾ cwt each, (Kentledge metal), and shanked with Lowmoor bar iron, 15 feet in length, 2 ½ inch square, working in iron V guides (to be here-after replaced with wood), fitted in iron braces of competent strength. The boxes below are very strong, and calculated to wear some time, discharging in front and both ends, into two kinds of ripples, thence into Bendigo tables of two throws each, suspended by rods.'[45]

July 1865 - Supply of plant with erection subcontracted[46], purchased from Fortuna Co. for L1700.[47]


New Great Britain Gold Mining Co.

April 1863 - Previously, overhaul and repair of one 16 horse power steam engine, one 12 horse power steam engine, three boilers, 300 feet of 10.5 inch pumps, and cast iron puddling machine.[48]


New National Co.

December 1864 - Supply of engine, boiler, pipes and other machinery.[49] Engine was 40 horse power, boiler 30 feet by 6 feet 6 inches, and fly wheel 16 feet diameter weighing 5.5 tons.[50]


New North Clunes Co.

May 1863 - Pumping gear, for pumps to 'be procured in Melbourne'.[51]

June 1863 - Erection of pumping gear including a wheel measuring 8 2/3 feet diameter, and weighing 4 tons 6 cwt, for L557.[52]


New Perseverance Co.

January 1862 - Repair and general overhauling of the machinery, including the steeling of the discs and wipers.[53]


New Perseverance Quartz Mining Co.

July 1862 - Beam engine of 18 ½ inches by 35 inches (for crushing purposes).[54]


Newington and Pleasant Creek Co.

November 1870 - Telescope suction piece.[55]


Newington Quartz Mining Co.

February 1869 - Supply of machinery including 18 inches, 3 feet stroke cylinder engine by Cochrane, a 12 feet 4 inches diameter fly wheel, 4 feet diameter winding gear, pinion to spur wheel, 28 feet 4 inches x 6 feet 6 inches boiler, lift of pipes, and a T bob.[56]


Nile Cement Co., New Zealand

November 1869 - 8 head battery.[57]

Old Canadian Co.

April 1860 - Supply and erection of plant on the new site 'near to the spot where the great nugget was found'. The plant included: a 30 horse power, 18 inch-cylinder, 3 feet stroke engine by Landell's, of Kirkaldy; a 16 feet, 4 ton fly wheel; a 25 feet long, 5 ton boiler; and a battery of 16 stampers with patent sockets.[58] In March 1861 a new retort - which in experiments extracted one grain of gold from 10lbs of tailings, allowing the Old Canadian Co. to reclaim 50% more gold from the tailings processing.[59]

November 1863 - Iron work and pumping gear, for a sum of £115.[62]

Perseverance Co.

May 1861 - Revolving battery of 24 heads in an iron frame, an improved version of a revolving battery patented by Messrs Hunt and Opie of the Victoria Foundry, Ballarat.[63]


Perthshire Quartz Reef Mining and Crushing Co.

February 1865 - Previously, Steven's patent revolving stampers with 12 heads, 6 inch cam shaft, cast iron frames and wrought iron cams.[64]


Phoenix Co.

October 1862 - Gearing (to the value of £348) for an engine supplied by Mr J. H. Fouracre of Ballarat (valued at £400), to suit plans and specifications prepared by the company's superintending engineer, Mr A. A. Lambert.[65]


Port Phillip Co.

February 1864 - After faulty stamp heads from England had caused the Port Phillip Co. considerable trouble, contracts were given to the Phoenix Foundry and Enoch Chamber (of Melbourne) for the ongoing supply of stamp heads.[66]


Potozi Co.

December 1869 - Steam pipes for winding engine.[67]


Pride and Stringer's Co.

March 1869 - 20 head battery.[68]


Prince Alfred Co.

October 1868 - Supply of machinery for Chilian mills.[69]

Red Jacket Co.

November 1861 - Previously spur wheels, trucks, etc., for a cost of about L190.[70]


Rose Hill Co.

March 1866 - Supply 2 cast iron puddling machines and pumping gear, cost L577 13s 4d.[71]


Royal Saxon Co.

January 1864 - Seven-and-a-half ton horse, the largest iron casting in Ballarat to that date. The event brought large numbers of spectators, supplied with champagne by the foundry. The purpose of the horse was for raising the existing machinery at the shaft in Brown's paddock[72] near Lake Wendouree about '300 yards from the old shaft' by Sturt Street[73] - to a height necessary for effective pumping. (The timber frames had shrunk considerably and the Royal Saxon Co. chose iron-work, as it was cheaper than cut stone.)[74] The work was expected to take six weeks to complete.[75]

October-November 1864 - Erect two iron puddling machines[76] and gearing (valued at £700).[77]

October 1860 - County court suit for bill of exchange of goods, valued at L50 0s 2d.[78]

Sailor's Reef Quartz Mining Co.

Scotchman's Reef Quartz Mining Co.

July 1869 - Previously, supply of boiler.[83]


Shepherd's Flat Gold Mining Co.

May 1861 - Supply of pumps.[84]


South Clunes Co.

August 1870 - Battery.[85]


South Grenville Gold Mining Co.

April 1863 - Agent for obtaining engine and boiler from Geelong.[86]


Spea Bona Gold Mining Co.

April 1867 - Previously, work unknown, successfully petitioned for winding up of the company.[87]


Speculator Co.

September 1867 - Supply and erection of 16 feet puddling machine with 3.5 inch horizontal and 5 inch upright shafting, 3 feet crown wheel, pipe to sluice and machine bend-pipe to head of column, for cost L173 cash.[88]


Speedwell Co.

September 1860 - Supply and erection of machinery for L2,020.[89]

February 1861 - Supply and erection of a 14 horse-power winding engine, at a cost of £412. The machinery was erected by a Mr Grant.[90]


Star of the East Co.

April 1896 - 75 inch by 120 inch beam engine of 270 horsepower (for pumping purposes) for the No. 2 shaft, Sebastopol.[91]


St George United Co.

January 1864 - Supply of a pump lift and accompanying gear, at a cost of £488 9s 6d.[92]

March 1865 - Supply of 3 cast iron puddling machines.[93]


Suburban Co.

August 1862 - Puddling machine (manufactured for a cost of £150), designed by the Suburban Co. engineer, Mr Edwards. It was described as: perfectly watertight; made of cast-iron circular segments, bolted together; joints packed with India rubber; and compact enough to be moved in one piece.[94]

February 1870 - Previously, goods to value L18 1s.[95]
