Background

The photographer A.V. Smith commenced as a photographer in 1855, learning his trade from William Ellis, and is listed in the 1857 Huxtable's Directory. [1] and the 1865 Dicker's Ballarat Directory. He operated as a photographer in Ballarat until his death on 24 February 1874. Smith's Red Hill Photographic Rooms were located in Main Road at what is now 306 Main Road.
