Alfred Bowring
History
Known as Alfred Arthur Bowring, was a horse trainer before enlisting 7 September 1914, service number 1009, assigned to the 11 Battalion, A.I.F. He embarked HMT Suffolk to join M.E.F. (Gallipoli Penninsula), 2 March 1915, he died of wounds (accidentally received) 20 January 1917. He was awarded the 1914/1915 Star, British War medal and the Victory medal. [1]

Private Bowring SERN 1009, enlisted Blackboy Hill W.A. On Tuesday evening last Mr. John Bowring received word through the Defence Department from England that his son. Private Alfred Arthur Bowring. had died of accidental wounds on January 20. Private Bowring enlisted from West Australia shortly after the outbreak of war, being attached to A Company, 11th Battalion. 3rd Brigade. Private Bowring was in the first boat that landed at Gallipoli, and received a nasty wound in the ankle. When he returned after recovering from this he was engaged as a sapper. He recovered from his wounds and returned to the peninsula, he was then evacuated to France and then to an invalided to hospital in England. On one occasion Private Bowring was standing by a Lieutenant who was struck by a bullet he took the officer to a place of safety. The lieutenant then asked him to go back for his things. and to bring his own along also, and in going back Private Bowring received a slight wound also.
Private A. A. Bowring was born in Bowenvale, and received his education at the Leviathan and the Timor State schools, he was 43 years of age, a widower and leaves no children. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. J. Bowring and family in their bereavement. Flags were flown at half-mast at the state school, fire brigade station, and other places as a mark of respect for the late soldier. Mr J. Bowring has another son at the front. Private Cornelius Bowring. "somewhere in France," also a grandson. Trooper Robert Bowring. who is in Egypt.
