History

Alfred James Pittard (1868–1950) was born in Ballarat West. Alfred's father was James Alfred Pittard, who was a boot-maker and owned a shoe shop in Bridge Street. After going to Geelong to work as a plumber he returned to Ballarat in 1891, to work in his fathers shop. Alfred went on to take over the business from his father and moved the store location to Sturt Street, Ballarat West. The business flourished and Alfred opened another store in Lydiard Street, Ballarat West and a store in Maryborough.

Alfred Pittard was an active member of the community and was heavily involved in the churches St Peter's Church of England West and St Paul's at Ballarat East.

In 1908 Pittard was elected to the Ballarat East town council and was mayor for the year 1913 - 1914 and again for the year 1920 - 1921.

Alfred James Pittard, along with W.D. Hill endorsed the merging Ballarat West and Ballarat East, two divided communities, in order to create the 'Greater Ballarat'. Pittard and Hill deemed this amalgamation necessary to bolster the decentralization of industry after the Gold Rush and the end of Gold Mining. Both men passionately believed that the union of Ballarat East and West was required to counteract the loss of industry due to the end of the Gold Rush and crucial for the revival of Ballarat.

Pittard had another term of mayor in 1926. he also worked on the Ballarat Water Commission and Sewerage Authority.

Alfred James Pittard married Alice Mary Crocker, the daughter of George Crocker who was a draper and councillor in Ballarat west.
