Alfred Rowell
History
Alfred Rowell was born in Ballarat on 01 August 1892. He was working as a plumber and gasfitter in Ballarat when he enlisted for service during World War One on 09 March 1916, aged 24.[1]
During World War One Alfred Rowell (791) was a sergeant with the 39th Battalion. He served in France as bandmaster for the 39th Battalion and stretcher bearer. From May to August 1919 he was given leave in London to attend cornet lessons with Professor Kamt at the Albert Hall. He was discharged on 29 December 1919. He returned to Ballarat and became bandmaster at the Ballarat Orphanage.[2]
Alfred Rowell married Olive Jeffs.
Legacy
World War One service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.
A tree was planted for Alfred Rowell (0791) in the Ballarat Orphanage's Arthur Kenny Avenue of Honour.[3]
Alfred Rowell became prominent in brass band circles in Ballarat including leading the Orphanage band and establishing the Ballarat Soldiers' Memorial Band.[4]
