Ventilation in the Allendale Mines
In the early days of mining at Allendale lack of ventilation caused black outs and lack of time caused by the influx of carbon dioxide. These conditoins existed for many years until Richard Squire got busy to ensure the miners had good air to beathe and work in. At the West Berry Consols he installed two powerful blowers, put 20 inch pipes down the shaft, and 16 inch pipes right through all main reef drives. To show their appreciattion the men of Creswick and Allendale tendered Richard Squire with a banquet at Creswick Town Hall.[2]
