Antonio Caligari

History

Antonio Caligari was born at Bowenvale, Victoria. He initially served with the 8th Battalion, before transfering to the 60th Battalion during World War One, enlisting at Broadmeadows on 19 August 1915, and is listed on the Timor Primary School Honour Roll. At the time of his enlistment he as a 21 year old miner, and gave his mother, Maria Caligari of Bowenvale, as his next of kin. While a member of the 8th Battalion Antonio Caligari received a shrapnel wound in the leg, rejoining his unit on 24 February 1915. On 24 February 1916 her was transferred to the 60th Battalion, and the following day was promoted to Corporal. On 25 March 1916 he was promoted to Lance Sergeant. On 16 July 1916 the newly appointed Sergeant Caligari (652) received a slight gun shot wound to the upper left arm, remaining on duty on the French batlefield. On 23 July 1916 he was admitted to Reading War Hospital with a gun shot wound to the arm and leg, having been shot in the thigh on 22 July 1916.

On 09 November 1917 Antonio Caligari reported to No 6 Officer Cadet Battalion and appointed Cadet. on the 16th of that month he was struck of strength and transferred back to the 60th Battalion.

He was wounded for the 4th time on 27 April 1918, and again on 02 May 1918.

Antonio Caligari returned to Ausralia on 26 November 1918.

BOWENVALE FAREWELL. BOWENVALE, Saturday. That the residents of Bowenvale are proud of their two representa tives, who have volunteered with the expeditionary force now about to proceed to Europe, was shown in a practical manner on Friday evening in the Public Hall. The two young men, Arthur Olsen, the eldest son of Mrs S. Greenwood, and Antonio Caligari, eldest son of Mr and Mfrs A. Caligari, of Bowenvale, occupied seats on the platform, and were received with enthusiastic cheers by the large audience present. Mr F. H. Hornsby, J.P., occupied the chair, and Crs. C. Williamson and P. Walsh, Messrs S. Coombe, J. Wen mouth, E. Carlyon, and W. Camp bell were also An the platform. All these gentlemen spoke highly of the young men, and wished them God speed and a safe return to their homes. Mr F. Hornsby, junr., and C. Boromeo added a few words ex pressing the regret of the Bowenvale Football Club, of which body the two young fellows have taken an active part this season, both being members of the committee. The chair man then presented Mr Caligari with a shaving outfit, and Mr Olsen with a smoker's outfit, and asked them to accept the gifts, not for their intrin sic value but as a small token of the esteem in which they were held by their friends in Bowenvale, and assured them that their home com ing would be the occasion of another large gathering in the Public Hall. Both young men made a suitable response. A splendid musical programme was interspersed between the dif ferent speeches, solos being rendered by Mrs A. Nichol (Betley), Miss Batty (Havelock) and Messrs P. Powell, A. Du Bourg, S. Coombe, and F. Hornaby, junr.; duets by Misses Coombe and Body, and Mesars F. H. Hornsby, sear., and P. Powell; violin solos by Master Batty (Have look) ; and a recitation by Mr W. Campbell, the accompaniments be ing played by Miss Horneby and Mr Newton Annear. Votes of thanks were accorded the speakers and singers and to the chairman. The singing of "Rule Britannia" and " God Save the King," concluded the proceedings. For about half-an hour after the young soldiers were busy shaking hands and bidding good-bye to their many friends. The arrangements for the send-off were well carried out by a committee con sisting of lessers T. James, A. Du Bourg, H. Horn, J. Denyer, and F. Hornsby, with Mr W. Allison, junr., as secretary.
