- Pte Arch. Campbell was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs J. Campbell, of Chute, near Beaufort, to lose his life in the war. Last Thursday his relatives were advised by the Defence Department that he had been killed in action in France on the 25th August. Prior to enlisting Pte Campbell resided at Chute, and was highly respected. He was an expert axeman, and won many contests in the district, and was also a member of the Waterloo Band. Pte Campbell left Australia some 18 months ago, and was on board the Southland when she was torpedoed. He was in the water for two hours before being rescued. Pte Campbell served in Gallipoli for over four months, and was in the evacuation. He had been in France ever since, being attached to a machine gun section. The deceased was 26 years of age, and was attached to the 23rd Battalion 6th Infantry Brigade.[1]
