Community Involvement

In July 1868, Mr. Doane, a candidate for the state seat of Ballarat West spoke at a meeting at the hotel.[2]

RIOTOUS CONDUCT.
A man named Richard M'Kay, aged 35 years, and a laborer by occupation, was the cause of some little excitement in the vicinity of the Argyle hotel, situated at the corner of Doveton and Clarendon streets, last night. It seems that be obtained an entrance into the hotel and proceeded to smash a large pane of glass. Both the licencee and Constable Jay, who is stationed at Ballarat North, remonstrated with the man, but instead of inducing him to cease his riotous conduct had quite the opposite effect, as M'Kay became very violent. Pulling a paling off a fence near by he dealt Constable Jay a severe blow on the head, and a desperate' struggle ensued. The officer eventually prevailed, and after some trouble succeeded in lodging the offender in the City lockup, where three charges were' entered against him, viz.:—Wilful damage, assaulting the police, and resisting the police. M’Kay will be brought before the City Court this morning.[5]

A petition, signed by over 1000 of the lending ratepayers of the Western Borough, will be presented at the next meeting of the council, praying that Doveton street may be lowered between Sturt and Mair streets. The petitioners will also suggest that the hill at the junction of Doveton and Clarendon street should be cut through opposite the Argyle Hotel, and the earth thus removed utilised for filling in the Ganrr Creek over the new culvert."[6]
