SOLDIER HONORED.

SECOND LIEUTENANT ARTHUR HUGHES.

Another district soldier who has gained distinction on the battlefield of France is 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Hughes. The act for which he was awarded the Military Cross is thus officially detailed—

"Although he was wounded he, accompanied by another officer, discovered and captured a machine gun."

The mother of Lieutenant A. Hughes, who is a native of Broomfield. now resides at 210 Drummond street, south, Ballarat, and his father is engaged, in mining operations in New Zealand. Lieutenant Hughes, who is 31 years of age, belongs to the 24th Battalion, and sailed with the 11th Reinforcements for that Battalion, in March last. Prior to enlisting he was a teacher at the Pleasant street Elementary High School. On the 28th August he was admitted to the 28th General Hospital, suffering from gunshot wound in the foot. He was a prominent member of the Ballarat Rowing Club, and played football with the South City and Broomfield teams.
