Background

In 1888 a number of meetings were held in connection with the establishment of a gas supply for Bacchus Marsh. In August 1888 it was reported that Coates & Co. were expected to be able to supply gas to Bacchus Marsh consumers by March or April 1889. A site was selected in Graham Street. Bricks were ordered and plant was ordered from England.[1]

History

Around 1888 the Bacchus Marsh Gasworks were established.[2] Gas light was installed in Bacchus Marsh on 23 September 1989.[3]

In 1926 the Bacchus Marsh Gas Supply Company Limited was formed to amalgamate the gasworks and other gas undertakings for the common good.[4]

In the early 1930s the works were virtually rebuilt and by 1936 a new gasholder was completed.[5]
