History

In 1882 the Victorian Municipal Directory announced Ballarat has for some time been the leading gold-field town of Victoria, and is now the next city in importance to Melbourne It owes its present position to being in the centre of perhaps the richest gold-yielding district in the world. [1]

The Yarrowee River divided the municipalities of Ballaarat and Ballarat East. [2]

The Mining Registrar’s Office was located in Lydiard Street, Ballarat in 1856 in what was formerly the Government Treasury building.[3]
