Ballarat Electric Supply Company
Background
History
The Ballarat Electric Supply Company opened a power station in Dana Street in January 1895.[1] It was powered by two 50 horsepower steam engines. Initially there were not private customers, the power being used for street lighting.
The Ballarat Electricity Supply Company participated in Factory Day, 1917, an initiative of the Forward Ballarat Movement.
In 1938 the electricity Supply Department was located at the south-western corner of Wendouree Parade and Ripon Street. In that year the company boasted In Ballarat's second century electricity will take an ever increasing part in the lives of its citizens. The State Electricity Commission has now made electricity so low in cost that its use is continually increasing for: - lighting, power, heating, in inindustry, commerce and the home.[2]
