Background
History
The Ballarat Mining Institute was formed in December 1859 for reading and discussing papers on mining. James Baker was the president, and he read his inaugural address in the Mining Board Room on 6 December 1859. A few papers were read after Baker's speech, including one on H. R. Nicholls on 'Mining Accident Prevention'. A few meeting followed then there was little activity until November 1860, when two or more papers were read. No further meetings were held.[1]
