Establishment

'Ballaarat Times and Southern Cross' newspaper was first published on 4 March 1854, [1] by experienced English journalist Henry Seekamp.[2] Its last issue was 1861. [3]

The paper was closed down by the government in the aftermath of the Eureka Stockade after its editor Henry Seekamp was arrested on the 4th December 1854 and charged with sedition.[4] Ironically, Seekamp was the only person ever convicted of a crime as a result of the Eureka Rebellion. He was jailed for three months for sedition.[5]

Location

In 1854 Henry Seekamp published the paper from his office in Mair Street, opposite the Haymarket. [6] Seekamp sold the newspaper to Joseph Henry Dunne.

By December 1854 the office had moved to the north-east corner of Victoria and Humffray Streets.[7]

In 1857 it was located in Main Road, Ballarat East. [8]

Sovereign Hill Recreation

The Ballarat Times Office is recreated in Main Street, Sovereign Hill Museums Association outdoor museum.
