Ballarat and District Industrial Heritage Project:About
Background
The Ballarat and District Industrial Heritage wiki was instigated to celebrate 140 years since the establishment of technical education in Victoria, when the doors of the Ballarat School of Mines opened. It is a space where expert, amateur and novice historians come together to build a free resource for everyone. It is therefore a 'live' collaboration and differs from traditional sources as information is continually created and updated.
The wiki is overseen by a team of technology and knowledge experts, made up of paid and volunteer staff. We encourage user to contribute to the wiki.

In undertaking the Ballarat and District Industrial Heritage Project we aim to restore the significance of sites, events, objects, people and businesses to the living memory of Ballarat's population. It is hoped that this will enhance the sense of community identity and lead to opportunities for successful education and tourism initiatives.
A pilot program was initiated using volunteers of the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre and students of the University of Ballarat to generate content for the wiki. In the summer of 2011-2012 Industrial Heritage Scholarship recipients undertook the task of transferring information from the University of Ballarat's Historical Collection to pages of the wiki. The Ballarat and District Industrial Heritage Wiki was officially launched by Prof. Barry Golding on Friday 16 November 2012 at the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre. The project continues to grow through the efforts of the University and contributions of the public.
The project was initiated and developed by Clare Gervasoni in 2011. Beth Kicinski became Content and Design Manager of the wiki in March 2012.
