Origin of the name

The origin of Carisbrook’s name, may have come from ‘Carrie’s Brook’, named after Caroline Bucknall, the daughter of E.G. Bucknall, an early local pastoralist but there was a police camp and lockup called Camp Carisbrook, before the town was surveyed in 1851 and there were also pre-existing Carisbrooks in New Zealand and the Isle of Wight.

History

Carisbrook is a rural township on the Pyrenees Highway and the Castlemaine to Maryborough railway line, 8 km east of Maryborough. It also intersects with local roads to Talbot and Eddington, and is on the Tullaroop Creek.

Castlemaine has state and national historical significance, the alluvial workings here were the richest at the time of discovery. Specimen Gully is the allegedly the site of the first surface gold in the colony. There are alluvial flats, extensive mine remains and mullock dumps, water wheel foundation sand water races, open cut mining and on freehold land, historic stone buildings and miners cottages.
