Carl H.F. Werner
History
Carl Heinrick Ferdinand Werner was born in Kiel, Holstein in 1852, the son of Fritz Werner. Holstein was ruled by the King of Denmark but became part of Prussia in 1864 after the second Schleswig/Holstein war. In the following years a number of young people emigrated. Carl Werner arrived in Australia in 1870, aged 18. He lived with an uncle in Ballarat, and due to receiving some early optical training in Germany, he joined Alex, Marks and Co. in Ballarat. H e worked with William Henry Carter who had undertaken an apprenticeship as a jeweller in Melbourne. carter and Werner started their own business, Carter and Werner, as jewellers, opticians and importers of optical instruments in Lydiard Street. C. Werner & Co., originally opened in the Fine Art Gallery Ballarat in 1889 by Carl Werner, is the oldest established optometry practice in Victoria.[2]
Carl Werner married Margaret Leonie, the daughter of a Scottish migrant who had established a business in Ballarat.
