Carl Wilhelm Janssen was a process engraver, working in the Sebastopol area before World War One.[1]

History

Carl Wilhelm Janssen was born at Ballarat in October 1887, and enlisted for service during World War One at Prahan on 18 August 1914. Lance Corporal Jansson (757) served with the 5th Battalion.[2]

An original ANZAC, and the first Ballarat man killed in action during World War One, he saw fire on 25 April 1915, and was buried at sea on 26 April 1915 at sea at Gallipoli. He was hit in the abdomen by schrapnel when his boat was hit by a shell during the Gallipoli landing. His sister was listed as next of kin - Beatrice Louise Jensson of 1 Berry Street, Mentone.

Legacy

A tree was planted in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour for Carl W. Janssen, the Sebastopol Honour Roll, and he is listed on the Magpie State School Honour Roll.
