PREMATURE EXPLOSION

NARROW ESCAPE OF DAYLESFORD MINERS.

At the Dry Diggings mine two miners named James Henderson (1) and Martin Pedretti narrowly escaped being blown to pieces They had charged five holes with dynamite in the north drive of the in-termedite level. Henderson had lit four fuses, and was lighting the fifth when one of the first charges, prob-ably owing to defective fuse, exploded. Henderson escaped unhurt. Pedretti, standing back in the drive, was struck by a large piece of stone on the side of the head, and sustained a painful wound. He arrived at the hospital in a weak state through loss of blood, but it is not thought that his injuries will prove fatal.
