Effie McLeod
History
Effie McLeod was born at Framlingham near Warrnambool. She enlisted on 24 July 1917 at the age of 25. She had trained as a nurse for four years at Ballarat and gave her next of kin as Mrs L. McLeod of the Victoria Coffee Palace, Lydiard Street, Ballarat, Victoria.[1]
Staff Nurse McLeod who left Australia on 12 June 1917 on board the Mooltan during World War One. She disembarked at the Suez on 19 July 1917.[2]
She returned to Australia aboard the Orari on 16 May 1919. Her medals were sent to The Wattle Tea Rooms, 33 Lydiard Street South, Ballarat.[3] Just over a week later she sailedto Salonica in Greece where she served predominantly at the 52nd General Hospital treating sickness rather than battle wounds.[4]
In March 1919 she was admitted to the 14th Australian General Hospital suffering from rheumatism and arthritis. She returned to Australia on the Orari, disembarking on June 30th 1919. Her medals were sent to The Wattle Tea Rooms, 33 Lydiard Street South, Ballarat. Effie continued to live in Raglan Street North. She died in December 1973, aged 84.[5]
Legacy
World War One service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.
