Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services

This includes operators “engaged in the provision of electricity; gas through mains systems; water; drainage; and sewage products.” (Trewin and Pink, 2006, p. 200).

This division does not include operators “mainly engaged in the construction of water, gas, sewerage or stormwater drains or mains, electricity or other transmission lines or towers, pipelines, or any other civil engineering projects,” that are included in the division of Construction.

History

Electricity was introduced to Ballarat householders in 1905. Gas had been the main form of illumination in Ballarat since 1858 and on 15th July 1905 the Edison Electric Company asked, "Is Electric Light Cheaper than Gas or other Illuminants?" The "new system of lighting" was to be "ready within the month", and "by using the latest types of glow lamps" Electricity would "not only compare favourably with Gas, but (would) come far cheaper in the end." (1)

Operators involved in Electricity Supply will have one or a combination of the following activities as the primary activity of their operations: electricity generation using coal or coal derived products; electricity generation using mineral gas including coal gas; electricity generation using mineral oil or mineral oil derived products; electricity generation using other mineral fuels; biomass electricity generation; geothermal electricity generation; solar electricity generation; tidal electricity generation; wind electricity generation; electricity transmission; electricity distribution; and/or on selling electricity and electricity market operation.

Gas Supply

Operators involved in Gas Supply are those supplying gas through mains systems.

Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Services

Waste Collection, Treatment and Disposal Services
