Origin of the name

History

Garibaldi in Victoria was a mining district. The township of Garibaldi grew around mines along the gold lead.[1] At the time of the opening of the Garibaldi Sunday School the mining industry was flourishing and the population large and prosperous. The population gradually drifted to other centres, and the district settled into agricultural and dairying pursuits. The only evidence of past mining being the mullock heaps.[2]

Governance

Garibaldi is in the Golden Plains Shire.

Education

Garibaldi State School No. 2173 was opened in 1879, and closed on 22 September 1943, and records were transferred to Grenville State. When that school was destroyed by fire in 1952, the Garibaldi records were also destroyed so little authentic information is available. The land was handed over to the resident of the district and became a community centre.[3]
