Gee Yung
Gee Yung was a cook in Ballarat, <1915>.
History
Gee Yung worked as a cook at the Red Lion Hotel.
In 1915, Gee Yung was assaulted outside a store in Main Street, Ballarat:
Andrew Charles Young was charged with having unlawfully assaulted a Chinaman named Gee Yung on Sunday last. Sergeant Robinson conducted the prosecution. Gee Yung, cook at the Red Lion hotel, stated that on Sunday last he was in a Chinese storekeeper's shop, when the defendant entered, and asked to buy a packet of cigarettes. Witness answered that it was Sunday, and no cigarettes would be sold on that day. Another Chinaman was present. The defendant, in the shop, used bad language, and was ordered outside by the owner of the store. Witness followed the defendant out side, and was struck on the forehead by Young with his fist. Subsequently witness complained to Constable Walle and gave Young in charge. Leong Way, storekeeper, of Main street, gave corroborative evidence with regard to the assault. Constable Walle gave evidence as to the arrest of the defendant, who said to witness, "I will stouch every one of them in front of you." The defendant was quite sober at the time Young said he admitted having struck the Chinaman, but he did not know this constituted an unlawful assault. Mr Pittard — Is the fact that the Chinaman denied you the cigarettes the only fault you had to find with defendant. I had no other grievance against him. I had taken a couple of drinks previous to that. A fine of £3, with 1Os 6d costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment, was imposed. Fourteen days were allowed in which to obtain the money.[1]
