Background

The Gem Manufacturies was a group of manufacturing and manufacturing agency companies owned by Edwin Rash. Gem Manufactories sold building products, cleaning and household products, novelties, and infants shoes made by Edwin's father Samuel Thomas Lamb at the The Gem Nursery Shoe Manufactory.[1]

History

In the early 1900 Edwin Rash was a travelling salesman for the family shoe manufacturing business based in Sydney. [2]

Innovations

Edwin Rash and his father invented a composition of leather waster that was moulded and veneered to form a strong lighweight product that was designed to be used as protective armour during the Boer War. The was known as Evalyte. In 1911 edwin Rash formed the company Evalyte Manufacturing Co. Ltd.[3]
