History

George Edwards Stephens was born near Gordon, Victoria. A 33 year old commercial artist at the time of his World War One enlistment on 02 June 1916, he was single and listed his mother, Georgiana Stephens, as his next of kin. George Stephens (RN 6600) was a member of the 39th Battalion.[1]

The [Ballarat School of Mines ] Council also received with much regret the news of the deaths on active service in France in April last of Mr George Stephens, lithographic artist, and of Lieut. G.D. Evans, both of whom were past students of the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries.[2]

In March 1917 he was transferred to the 8th Battalion.[3]

Shot in the head resulting in a fractured cranium, he died of wounds received in action at the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, France, on 23 April 1917 and is buried in the Grevillers Cemetery, France.[4]

Legacy
