Gerrard and Sleep were watchmakers and jewellers operating from premises on Lydiard Street, Ballarat in 1858.[1] One of the business's partners was prominent community member Joseph Thomas Smith.

Background

History

Gerrard and Sleep's shop was involved in a court case surrounding a stolen watch. According to the Court's records, Gerrard and Sleep were called upon to repair the gold watch, which had been stolen. The value of the watch was said to be £20. This occurred in 1857.[2] Gerrard and Sleep manufactured silver cups, weighing 15oz. and valued at £25 for a Mr. Cherry, who was holding a wrestling competition in 1862.[3]
