History

Gertrude Munro was born at Alfredton, Ballarat, the daughter of Mr. Alexander B. and Mrs. Emma P. Munro, of 5 Gillies St., Alfredton, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She was educated at Queen's College, Ballarat. Gertrude completed training at the Ballarat Base Hospital in December 1910 and joined the Australian Nursing Army Service on 22 August 1916.[1]

Sister Gertrude Evelyn Munro of the Australian Army Nursing Service died at Salonika of pneumonia and malaria on 10 October 1918 (Roll of Honour says died 10 September 1918 ), aged 36. She is buried at the Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.[2]

Miss G. Munro died at 43rd Gen.Hos. on Oct. 10th. She was only ill for 10 days altogether from the outset and was put straight into hospital for sick Sisters where she got the very best medical attention possible, and in addition to the Special Nurses one of the friends was constantly with her when I was not there. She had a bad combination, Pneumonia and M.T. Malaria and which is very hard to fight. Being a strong healthy woman wer hoped against hope she might win through, but alas it was not to be. It would not express anything to say how much we regret her loss - she is buried in a pretty little Cemetery with some other Sisters and Soldiers who have given their lives for their Country. I have written fully to her parents about everything pertaining to her grave. T. McFardie White, Prin. Matron A.A. N.A. 2 December 1918.[3]
