History

Gilbert Andrew Amos was a Gold Commissioner stationed at Eureka in 1854. In August 1854 he increased the number of searches for unlicensed diggers on the Eureka Lead. [1]

T.R. Proctor was commissioned to make a gold cup, valued at 120 guineas, to be presented by the diggers to Commissioner Gilbert Amos.

Legacy

Amos is associated with the burning of Bentley's hotel, which was a forerunner to the Eureka Stockade. He mounted his horse and rode towards around 4,000 diggers congregating outside the hotel. He unsuccessfully tried to pacify the crowd, but while he was being jeered by the crowd the hotel was set on fire. He subsequently testified in the trial against some of the men accused of setting fire to the hotels, as well as against John Josephs at the Eureka Trial. [2]
